What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a cosmetic procedure that pricks the treated area with tiny, sterile needles.
These small wounds stimulate your body to produce more collagen and elastin.
Collagen is a protein present throughout your body and one of the main elements in your skin, bones, muscles, hair, tendons, and ligaments. Collagen helps keep skin volumized and plump.
Elastin, like collagen, is a protein present in connective tissue. It’s the element that helps your body’s tissues resume their initial shape after contracting or stretching. Elastin is predominantly found in the skin.
Collagen and elastin are two components that help keep your skin from sagging and drooping. When your skin’s levels of collagen and elastin are depleted, you are more prone to wrinkles and lines, as well as sagging skin.
Because microneedling helps your body produce more collagen and elastin, microneedling helps your skin look younger.
Microneedling helps address the following common issues:
- Hair loss
- Dark spots
- Saggy skin
- Large pores
- Stretch marks
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Sun damage
Microneedling can be used all over your body – anywhere you have loose skin or stretch marks.
Microneedling vs. Laser Skin Tightening
A similar cosmetic procedure that stimulates collagen and elastin is laser skin tightening.
Laser skin tightening is also minimally invasive and non-surgical. It works by using an infrared light laser to penetrate the skin.
When the light from the laser is absorbed by the skin, tissue is vaporized. This leads to the removal of damaged and aged skin cells while boosting new collagen production.
Because the laser is hot, it heats up the collagen under your skin, which causes the collagen to constrict. This results in a firmer appearance overall.
Microneedling and laser skin tightening achieve similar results. However, microneedling has no downtime, while laser skin tightening requires a downtime of around a week.
Traditional Microneedling vs. Lutronic Infini Microneedling
One of the newest developments in the world of microneedling is the Lutronic Infini microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) device.
Lutronic Infini microneedling combines the skin-rejuvenating and protein-stimulating benefits of traditional microneedling with the addition of the skin-tightening benefits of laser treatments.
Microneedling with Lutronic Infini is suitable for all skin types and has very little downtime. Most patients see results within a week, with continued improvement over the course of six months.
Lutronic Infini microneedling is recommended to treat the following:
- Enlarged pores
- Fine lines
- Skin texture
- Uneven skin tone
- Acne scarring
- Sagging skin
- Dull skin

How Lutronic Infini Microneedling Works
This method of microneedling gets its name from both its device and its patent. The Infini device was patented by Lutronic Aesthetics in the early 2000s, earning FDA approval in 2013.
The Infini device contains 49 tiny, microscopic needles, which administer radiofrequency energy into the second layer of your skin, also known as the dermis.
Your skin is made up of three main layers: the hypodermis, the dermis, and the epidermis.
Your hypodermis layer is the deepest layer which contains subcutaneous tissue. Your midlayer, the dermis, contains connective tissues and produces collagen and elastin. Your top layer, the epidermis, contains several protective cells and is responsible for the color of your skin.
A 1990 French study determined that the dermis layer is the main cause for the appearance of aged skin. Since the dermis is the layer that produces collagen and elastin, the Infini device targets the dermis.
Traditional microneedling on its own cannot reach the dermis. However, when combined with laser radiofrequency (like the Lutronic Infini device), microneedling is able to reach the dermis, making it more effective overall as a skin rejuvenation treatment.
Plus, since Infini microneedling does not damage the top layer of your skin, this treatment is a great choice for medium and dark skin tones.
Infini Microneedling vs. Botox
Botox is a common cosmetic procedure that also has a subtle skin-tightening effect, therefore reducing wrinkles.
Botox works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles in the treated area to produce smoother skin.
Both procedures are excellent anti-aging treatments. Is one better than the other? Well, that depends on you and your treatment goals.
Botox only works on dynamic wrinkles – the types of wrinkles caused by your facial expressions. Infini microneedling can be used throughout the body.
Botox helps with fine lines and wrinkles, but it can also help treat medical conditions like migraines or excessive sweating. Infini microneedling also treats fine lines and wrinkles, but it’s useful for a variety of purposes, including treating uneven complexion, acne scars, and texture.
Botox results can take up to two weeks to start to show, while microneedling offers immediate skin rejuvenation.
Finally, Botox helps to temporarily address the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, while Infini microneedling actually stimulates your skin to produce more collagen, which results in longer-term effects.
